It is one of the most common questions after a website goes live: why can I not find myself in Google yet? The short answer: visibility is a process, not a switch. The longer answer will help you set realistic expectations and recognise when waiting is no longer sensible.

First, Google has to find your website

Before you appear anywhere in the results, Google has to know your site exists. This is called indexing: Google visits your website, reads the pages and adds them to its own database. For a new, technically sound website, this usually happens within a few days to a few weeks. Only after indexing will you appear in search results at all. A clear site structure and a sitemap help Google find its way, while a site that is accidentally blocked from indexing will never appear, however long you wait.

Want to check whether your site has been indexed? Type site: in Google followed by your domain name, for example site:yourcompany.com. If pages appear, Google knows you exist. If nothing appears, the site has not been indexed properly yet.

Then the real build begins

Being indexed is different from being found. For searches with little competition, such as your own company name or a specific service in a small region, a new website can reach noticeable positions within a few weeks. For broader keywords in crowded markets, it takes months, because Google only starts to count your site as trustworthy and established over time.

Think of a new shop that has just opened: a unit in a prime spot on the main street will attract passers-by soon enough. But building a loyal customer base takes time, however well the shop is laid out. Online works the same way.

A realistic timeline

  • The first few weeks — Google indexes the site; your company name becomes searchable.
  • Two to three months — clear positions for specific services in your own region, especially if the technical foundations are in order.
  • Six to twelve months — steady growth for broader searches, provided the website continues to be worked on.

These are practical guidelines, not promises. How crowded your market is, how saturated your industry is online and how strong the technical foundation is all determine whether you land above or below them.

What influences the speed

  • The technical foundation — fast loading times, a mobile-friendly structure and a logical page hierarchy make things easier for Google.
  • The content — pages that genuinely answer the questions customers ask perform better than thin copy.
  • The competition — in a town with three comparable businesses you will become visible faster than in a national market with thousands.
  • Trust signals — customer reviews and mentions on other websites show that your business exists and is taken seriously.

What you can do yourself

Ask satisfied customers for a review and make sure your business details are identical on your website, on social channels and in online listings. Keep the website alive: a page that sits untouched for months does not improve itself. New examples, projects or pages around your services give Google a reason to come back. It also helps to link related pages within your site, so Google can see which pages belong together and which subject each one covers.

When waiting is no longer sensible

If you still do not rank for your own company name after a few months, or Google refuses to include certain pages, something technical is probably wrong: a block in the settings, duplicate content or a structural error. That is not a matter of waiting longer, but of investigating. A quick technical audit usually makes the cause clear. In that case, it is worth having someone with technical SEO expertise review the site, before you lose months you will not get back.
